Dr. Tung’s Reading & Writing I

This class is aimed at students who can already read at a Third Grade level and can write sentences.

Reading and writing are two skills that go hand in hand. In order to write well, a child needs to read widely and deeply.

In this class, your child will read together with the other children and with the instructor passages taken from news articles, and occasionally from appropriate literature, usually classical. After discussing the passage on all levels, the students will then discuss and analyze the material in a Socratic seminar. Finally, they will brainstorm and write an organizer for a five-paragraph essay, draft it, edit it and publish the final product.

This class also uses the online Classcraft software to keep students motivated and as a means of assessment.

Dr. Fawzia Mai Tung

Fawzia Mai Tung earned an M.B.B.S. from the University of Jordan, as well as an Adv. Dip. Ed. from the University of London. After retiring from Psychiatry and Journalism, she founded the Chinese Community School in Jeddah, homeschooled her seven children, served as principal of the Arizona Cultural Academy, and taught Anatomy and Physiology at the Estrella Mountain Community College before founding and running a K-8 charter school, Aim High Institute, and a private PreK-12 school, Pax Academy. Dr. Tung has previously served on the ISNA Education Forum Planning Committee and is presently serving on the board of Consultants for Islamic Schools Excellence (CISE) as well as Secretary of the Board of the Islamic Schools League of America (ISNA). She is the founder of Tung Education Resources, LLC.
